How Many Months Could You Actually Stop Working? Meet the Chill Calculator

Your salary isn't the most reassuring number in your finances — this one is. Here's how to work out your financial runway, and let Recipro do it from your real numbers.

There's a question most people are quietly afraid to ask themselves: if the income stopped tomorrow, how long would I actually be okay? It sounds scary, but the answer is usually the most reassuring number in your entire financial life — and knowing it changes how you sleep.

That number has a name: your financial runway. Here's how to find yours.

The formula is refreshingly simple

Runway is just your total wealth divided by how fast you spend it:

Runway (months) = net worth ÷ (monthly expenses − passive income)

That's it. If you have $60,000 to your name and you burn $3,000 a month, that's 20 months of freedom sitting there whether you ever use it or not.

Notice it's really two moves: first work out your net monthly burn (expenses minus passive income), then divide your net worth by it. That's exactly the two steps the Chill Calculator walks you through when it shows how the number is worked out.

Two things make the number kinder than you'd expect:

  • Passive income counts against your burn, not your savings. Rent, dividends, a side stream — anything that arrives without you working — is subtracted from your monthly expenses first. You're only draining savings for the gap.
  • If passive income covers your expenses, the math breaks in your favor. When what comes in matches or beats what goes out, your runway isn't a number anymore — it's infinite. You're financially independent, and the calculator just shows an ∞.

Example: your runway shown as "you can chill for X" — or ∞ when passive income covers your expenses.

Why net worth is the right numerator

A common mistake is to only count cash in the bank. Your runway is really backed by your whole net worth — investments, property, and even money friends owe you can be drawn on if you truly needed to. Money you owe others pulls the other way.

That's exactly how Recipro's calculator adds it up:

Money you owe in ledgersSubtracted

The result is an honest picture, not just your checking balance.

Reading the result: it's breathing room, not a deadline

A runway of 14 months doesn't mean you have to do anything in 14 months. It means you have 14 months of choice — to leave a bad job, weather a layoff, or take a break — without the ground giving way. It's a measure of freedom, not a countdown.

And if you want the number to grow, there are only four levers, which is why the calculator points at exactly these:

  1. Cut monthly expenses — the fastest lever, because it shrinks the denominator and means every dollar of savings stretches further.
  2. Grow passive income — the most powerful, because enough of it makes the runway infinite.
  3. Build assets — steadily raises the numerator.
  4. Keep an emergency fund — so a bad month doesn't force you to sell something at the worst possible time.

Let Recipro do the hard part

You could work this out on any generic calculator — but you'd have to look up your net worth first, which is the tedious step nobody keeps up with. Recipro's Chill Calculator skips it entirely: it already knows your net worth, because it's built from the assets and ledgers you're already tracking.

Net worth pre-filled from your assets and ledgers

Example: your net worth is filled in automatically — you only add your monthly expenses.

Here's the whole flow:

  1. Open the Chill Calculator from your Assets page. Your total net worth is already there, pulled from your assets and ledger balances.
  2. Enter your monthly expenses. This is the only number you have to type — roughly what you spend to live in a normal month.
  3. Add passive income (optional). Rent, dividends, anything recurring that arrives without work.
  4. Read your runway. Recipro shows how many months (or years and months) your wealth would last — or celebrates an ∞ if your passive income already covers your expenses.
  5. Use the levers. The built-in tips show the four ways to extend it, so the number becomes something you can act on, not just look at.

Your salary tells you how you're doing this month. Your runway tells you how free you actually are. It's the more reassuring of the two — and because Recipro already knows your net worth, finding it takes about thirty seconds. Open the Chill Calculator from your Assets page and see how long you could chill.
